Since the beginning of the 1980's EAM vendors and CMMS vendors have often pitched their systems, in part, on their ability to capture failure data for use in improving and determining maintenance strategies.

Moreover, there is an enormous increase in companies offering some form of statistical or probabilistic methods for determining the periodicity of maintenance routines.
